1001 was produced by the ID5 Interactive Systems faculty as the result of an iterative draft design process. Apart from design aspects, permanent adaption of the surface to the human body was the working team’s main focus. They adopted various approaches as a means of controlling spatial movements. CAD was essential in order to simulate specific deformation of the surface and, in subsequent work stages, to shape this deformation in all its conditions. The aim was for 1001 to be formally convincing not only as an object but also in every possible use situation. More than 30 clusters, each consisting of three elastic rods, are mounted on a spherical base and support the reclining surface, which has a corresponding geometrical pattern but consists of rigid segments. DrawDEL Strands: An Experiment in the Oscillation of Materiality
DrawDEL Strands designed by Nikita Troufanov and Gonzalo Padilla is an experiment in the oscillation of materiality—layering information sets and shifting focus, materialized as part drawing part model.
In this hybridized 2d and 3d presentation neither mode of communication can stand without the other. It is an artifact to push the modality of fabrication not only for presentation but for its use as a design tool. Read the rest of this entry »
A Lamp which Produces an Electrical Current as a Result of it’s Kinetic Energy
The 3d printed nylon polymer lamp designed by Dr. Margot Krasojević is suspended by a spindle whereby it’s weight and form contribute to the angular momentum vector as it spins along its axis of rotation; it is affected by minor environmental changes such as temperature and air currents which rotate the light along its path of velocity. The light has a motion sensor diode clamped between both suspended 3d printed sections which powers the battery lighting the LED when in motion. As a result of it’s form, the light speeds up tremendously due to it’s conservation of angular momentum, the form of the light reduces it’s rotational inertia affecting it’s rotational speed which must increase to maintain constant angular momentum resulting in a brighter light. The light has been influenced by the physics behind ice skater spinning/a spinning top. Read the rest of this entry »
Student-Built, Digitally-Designed Multifunctional Bench
Kyiv National University of Architecture and Construction in Ukraine hold a workshop within the framework of conference “Contemporary education”. It was organized by the team of KG’MGarchitects studio. The main topic of workshop was using Autodesk Maya software for the design of architectural objects.
The first step served as a series of lectures designed to provide participants with tools (software), such as: modeling, the basics of direction of particles by the action of external forces and also the methods of simulation of physical processes in Maya. Lectures held by Iurii Kaygorodtsev, Tanya Zabavska, Andrew Mogylnyi and Kirill Tsuman. The principal aim was to acquire skills in using of digital methods to optimize the architectural spaces and structures. Examples were given by Frei Otto method of minimizing the ways (simulation sticking threads) and receiving of minimal surfaces (simulation of physics of materials).
Frei Otto’s method was used in first task to identify the pattern of spots which are more free from flows of people. Participants were invited to use one of the chosen spots to situate their own version of the bench. Read the rest of this entry »
Laboratory of Sensuality-Lamps as Objects in Motion / Stefan Wieland
If light is „the prime animator of space“, the most essential determinant in articulating the experience of design, than Stefan Wieland‘s lamps appear to challenge that hierarchy. Part of a larger collection of objects designed by the Frankfurt-based artist, these suspended lighting fixtures seek to overtake the senses and dominate the room. Spontaneous and deliberate at the same time, they have an almost synesthetic affect: they make you smell colors and taste sounds. Even the curious names of the lamps – Dark Kisses Melt Smoothly, The White of My Eyes, etc.- entail an abundance of tactile and visual associations describing an imagery that draws from emotions and senses, rather than ideas. Fragmented plates embrace the light in a sensuous movement that feels uninhibited. The luminaires are but moments captured in a perpetual child-like play, an act of improvisation freed from the imperative of making a definite design. Read the rest of this entry »
Cell Cloud Installation / Helbert Suarez and Remi Melander
Cell Cloud Installation, designed by Helbert Suarez and Remi Melander and manufactured by Barcelona-based System Design Studio, was exhibited at the 2012 Tent London. It is a modular divisional wall, suspended in the air, transformed into a 3 dimensional honeycomb structure that combines digital fabrication with organic geometry.
Description from the designers:
Cell Cloud is a formation of the random and organic geometry of the patterns of “marine clouds,” a structure shaped like honeycomb. Similar patterns are observed in flocks of birds, the growth of crystals, social networks and many ecosystems.
Using technologies of digital fabrication, two structures are created that seem to float, suspended as clouds. These are formed by inter connecting modules. As one moves around the structure, the perception of the cloud changes, recreating it from two-dimensional to three-dimensional, according to the position of the observer.

Time Tension Wood: A Construction System that Waits on Nature
Time Tension Wood is a construction system design by Taylor Gilbert based on a technique used by the Native American Indians for making bows. By applying consistent tension to freshly cut wood, the wood will slowly and gradually bend as it dries. Once the wood is dry after 3-5 months, the structure is permanent, and the ropes can be removed.
The system consists of brass brackets and ropes with a simple tension mechanism that are used to easily connect and manipulate freshly cut wooden poles. These components can be used to make a variety of objects and structures from a coat rack and tabletop supports to space dividers and small-scale architecture. Since this method relies on the natural properties of the wood in a slow process, there is no need for steam, heat, or any special equipment. Almost any kind of wood can be used, so the majority of the material can be sourced locally. Read the rest of this entry »
Archipelago Parametrically Designed Pavilion
Designed and built in collaboration between Chalmers University of Technology and Röhsska Museum of Design in Copenhagen, the Archipelago Pavilion is a network of seating structures that inhabits the cortyard in front of the Museum. The structure provides shaded seating inside and creates shaded spaces around it to place existing chairs and tables. The structure was built on site by 33 architecture students.
The pavilion was parametrically designed in Grasshopper and Rhino and built from 2 mm thick laser-cut steel sheets. Exactly 133 pieces of steel were joint together with 1535 joints with a total of 3640 bolts holding it together. Inside the pavilion visitors can lie comfortably on the surface, thanks to the steel’s possibility to stay cool when shaded. The intricate web of spaces resembles clusters of small islands in an archipelago. The perforation on the roof spreads out an organic pattern resembling the one you would see from a tree in the forest. Read the rest of this entry »
The Spaghetti Bench / Pablo Reinoso
The Spaghetti bench was designed by French-Argentine artist and designer Pablo Reinoso and created by Carpenters Workshop Gallery. Pablo Reinoso took public benches of anonymous design as a starting point for his reflection. Named Spaghetti, they start proliferating and finding their place in the most diverse spaces. The object is freed of its function to goes back to its path of wood, tree, vegetal. Read the rest of this entry »
