The initial concept for the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Centre for Drug Research and Development in Vancouver, British Columbia, is based on the idea of a canopy, floating above the ground level. Architects at Saucier + Perrotte have transformed the idea of a tree into an abstract system of tectonic elements that float above a public area containing fluid exhibition spaces. These act as a meeting point for faculty, researchers, students and outside visitors.

Located at the entry point to the 20,240 square meter plot of the UBC campus, the building is designed to act as a gateway to the southwest edge of the complex. The transparent ground floor is an inviting space that links the university to the outside world. The design reflects UBC’s world-class pharmaceutical science researchers, faculty, and the University’s status as an internationally recognized institution in scientific endeavors. Also housing the University’s Centre for Drug Research and Development, the project takes into consideration the future needs of the Pharmaceutical program.
