By: Lidija Grozdanic | April - 18 - 2012

Located 5 km south of Utrecht, the city of Nieuwegein was given a new city hall that will address the demands of the rapidly growing population. Busan Opera House Proposal / Diana Quintero de Saul

By: Lidija Grozdanic | January - 7 - 2012

Designed by Diana Quintero de Saul, this proposal for the Busan Opera House consists of an organic building-scape allowing for a variety of recreational and educational activities, and creating a cultural icon for Busan. The building is organized around three principal wavelengths generated parametrically, based on the pre-existing local tensions: a stunning ocean view to the west, a bustling city to the east, and a thriving cultural district to the south. From this parametric interaction the building emerges as the non-linear product of three analogical volumes. Each component can function independently yet is part of the same overall structure, inter-connected through the control point-responsive use of smooth spatial transitions. Bogota International Convention Center / Saucier+Perrotte Architectes

By: Lidija Grozdanic | January - 2 - 2012

The new architecture for The Bogota International Convention Center, proposed by Saucier+Perrotte Architectes, is meant to act as a reflection of the majestic topography surrounding the site. The signature building for Bogota and for Colombia-CICB, takes root in the physical and cultural landscape of the city. Cradled between the mountains and the river, this stunning landscape gives the urban environment and architecture its unique identity. This conceptual, broad horizon defining the space of the new project contains the geology of the site, its artifacts, both large and small, and the “veins” of precious metals, such as gold, that run beneath the city. By: Lidija Grozdanic | December - 27 - 2011

JDS’s proposal for the Bicycle Park in Chongming, China, consists of three landmark buildings, each portraying different aspects of the culture of cycling. With their spiraling shapes and sloping sides, the structures are accessible by bike, and offer a varied experience to visitors. The Park aims to inform and stimulate biking as an expression of social awareness, while illustrating the relationship between sport and technology through its distinctive architecture.

The Visitor Center acts as an entry landmark, serving as main access point and providing information about the park. The Bike Museum is a double helix, with its exterior portion used for the ride downwards. Swirling ramps provide excellent views of the surroundings, while the interior leads the visitors on a tour through the historical development of the bicycle. Istanbul Disaster Prevention and Education Center / Collective Architects

By: Lidija Grozdanic | December - 19 - 2011

The basic idea of the project is rooted in the notion of flows. It strongly references historical, environmental and even biological diversification and friction that shaped the contemporary city of Istanbul. The geometric form dominating the building is combined with typical Turkish patterns and ornaments, displaying both European and Asian cultural influences.

Located at the boundary between continents, the city of Istanbul is experiencing geophysical friction generated by the shifts of continental plates. The friction between two forces generates dramatic reaction of the elements; it can be transferred to all four basic elements in nature, with an impact determined by the level of energy. The same rule is applied to the urban environment. The layout of the structure reveals an atrium building, organized around the central square. The central area symbolizes aether, the 5th element in nature. Aether is also called, from Latin, ‘quinta essentia’ which stands for the element that unites the other four. By: admin | October - 10 - 2011

This project is a winning entry conceived by architects Chi Wai Chan, Xinyu Wan, and Geng Ke for a competition to design an arts and cultural square at Lake Sanyon in Daqing, China. Busan Opera House Proposal / Jian Junkai + Huang Jingi

By: Lidija Grozdanic | September - 26 - 2011

Except for the grand opera house auditorium, this proposal for the Busan Opera House would house performance spaces of different scales. Designed by China-based Jian Junkai and Huang Jingi, the building introduces open public areas as well as more intimate spaces to the city waterfront. The programmatic flexibility was the main intent of the design. It provides an optimal performance conditions for large ballet ensembles, opera performers, popular bands, etc, democratizing the Opera and integrating it with the city fabric. The idea of inclusiveness is supported by the building’s layout. Its vortex-like form seems to draw in the street surface, as if using it as its own envelope. Read the rest of this entry »

Center for Culture and Arts Aleppo, Syria / Studio DMTW

By: admin | September - 1 - 2011

Aleppo is one of the oldest cities in the world. It has always been perceived as one of the most important and influential cultural centres far beyond Syria and the arabic world. To live up to this fame the city has decided to open an international competition about the design of a cultural center whose main program is to comprise in addition to a library also an opera and a theatre.

Unfortunately, perhaps due to the political turbulences in the country, the outcome of the competition was never decided and the future of the project is still open.

The volume of each of the three main functions, opera, theatre, and library, is optimally tailored to the specific demands of the respective utilisation and clearly visible from the outside. The position of each function within the context depends on its interfaces with the other functions in the building as well as on the interfaces with the surrounding city and the visual contact with its important historic sites. Accordingly, all important transparent parts of the outer shell, as for instance, the background of the stage of the theatre and parts of the facade of the large reading hall, refer to the nearby world-famous citadel of Aleppo. This several thousand years old landmark therefore serves as the main cultural scenery for the new centre. Read the rest of this entry »

The “rocks” of Saint-Malo Meditheque are geological anomalies acting as cultural catalysts

By: Lidija Grozdanic | August - 23 - 2011

Inspired by the landscape of Bretagne, the Saint-Malo Mediatheque is designed in the form of three rocks placed on a granite plaza. The library and the cinema of Saint-Malo are meant to perform as a new cultural catalyst, activating the adjacent city area. Approached from the city, the first “rock” to meet the visitors is the library, followed by the film center. With the third-the entertainment center, the entire assemblage dominates the plaza, creating a vibrant atmosphere of cultural activity.

The three blocks are covered with mineral envelopes that visually resemble the material of the inner city. Their high energy performance and insolation features rely on the use of thermal inertia of the structures inside the buildings. The seemingly random positions of the “rocks” enable the interior  to open up and raise the ground level, achieving an optimal level of natural ventilation. The buildings are multi-sided and not specifically oriented. The Serero Architects specifically sought to avoid creating a disparity between the service and the main facade.
