2021 Skyscraper Competition

Today, 55% of the world’s population lives in urban areas, and this proportion is expected to increase to 68% by 2050. Living in these high-density cities, the cost of renting a house is ridiculously high and does not meet the standards of the general low-economy groups, resulting in the extremely poor quality of life for the low-economy groups.

In an attempt to solve this problem, Urban Parasitic System proposes using the existing space in the city center to provide a livable possibility for the low and medium economic groups parasitic in the megacities. This design chose to hang various architectural spaces between the buildings as the main concept of the design. The existing high-density city is improved by “parasitizing” the design space on the existing skyscraper space.

The concept of this scheme originated from “colony.” Through a non-linear growth microbial model of the colony, the space between the linear skyscrapers is filled non-linearly to generate an organic architectural space system. The main space of this design is urban rest space or public space. The design hopes to try to make up for the lack of rest space and time for busy workers in contemporary urban CBD through these architectural spaces.

This design refers to the growth model and morphological characteristics of the hyphae and uses the suspension cable force system to fit the hyphae’s growth phenomenon. The design forms a rest space connecting the skyscraper and the building through the simulation results of the suspended cable load-bearing structure. With time, suspended cable structures and resting spaces have increased, gradually forming an “urban parasitic space” with complete and diverse functions, large volumes, but parasitic between skyscrapers.

Workers in the urban CBD can reserve their favorite parasitic space through the mobile phone APP, and make full use of the lunch break and off-get off work time for rest, fitness, and entertainment.
